Loudoun Learning Lends a Hand
Michelle Johnson-Adair, owner of the Leesburg educational supply store Loudoun Learning, Inc., has teamed up with Loudoun Literacy Council to sponsor a book and educational games drive during the month of December. Purchases of selected children's books and literacy games will benefit the council's Family Literacy programs which serve disadvantaged children and families in the Loudoun County Head Start program and homeless shelters. A former Loudoun County teacher with 16 years experience, Michelle opened her store in 2002 as a resource for teachers, parents and home-schoolers to offer quality products at reasonable prices. Special Event: Loudoun Reads
A Celebration of Literacy
On Friday, September 5th, 2008, the Loudoun Literacy Council celebrated International Literacy Day with an evening of readings by local authors, community leaders and educators from Loudoun County in the Leesburg Town Rose Garden. The goal of this annual event, sponsored by Verizon, is to increase awareness of the Loudoun Literacy Council and its mission of improving literacy in Loudoun County. Our readers shared their favorite literary selections.
Author, Marc Leepson,
reading to the audience
A highlight of the evening was the participation of two of LLC’s adult learners and their volunteer tutor. Jing-Chiou Lee and Yu Cheng shared their original writings and Marnie Montgomery, their tutor, read poems from Shel Silverstein and A.A. Milne. These two students and Marnie received Certificates of Appreciation for their participation in the event and their hard work and literacy achievements. Our other readers were Carol Basham, Administrative Coordinator of Head Start; Peter Dunning, President of the Bluemont Concert Series; Noel Grove, author; Marc Leepson, author; Andrea McGimsey, Loudoun County Board of Supervisors; Jan Neuharth, author; Tom Sweitzer, playwright; and John R. Gardiner, author. The evening’s program was followed by book signings from some of the authors and light refreshments. Our thanks to all our readers, Verizon, Peter Dunning and Bluemont Concert Series for providing the sound system, Loudoun County Department of Parks, Recreation and Community Services, Town of Leesburg, Loudoun Museum, Tuscarora Mill, Costco and the Pink Shop for their contributions to this event.

CAN YOU SPELL FUNDRAISER?
The Loudoun Literacy Council is excited to announce The Second Annual Corporate Spelling Bee to be hosted by Lightfoot Restaurant on Monday night, November 12th from 7:00 to 9:30 pm!
What is a Corporate Spelling Bee? Your company will send a team to compete against other business leaders in a fast-paced, fun, Round Robin Spelling Contest. (A list of spelling words to study will be sent to you prior to the event.) The winning team will receive the Champion Speller’s Cup to display for one year, which will be announced in all the local papers. Celebrity judges will be on hand, as well as an emcee to make this a truly fun experience for your business while raising funds for the Loudoun Literacy Council. Verizon, Rolls Royce North America, and Argon ST have already signed on!
Funds generated by “The Bee” will support our mission--to improve literacy throughout Loudoun County. We are a nonprofit, charitable organization that helps low-literate adults and children from disadvantaged families learn to speak, read, write and understand English. We train volunteers from the community to become ESL instructors. Our trained staff provides literacy programs to children who live at or below the poverty line, as well as those who reside in our county’s homeless shelters.
We anticipate an evening of fierce but friendly competition, and hope that your company can support the Council and be part of The Bee--and the fun! Please return the Sponsor Form (280Kb Word Document) at your earliest convenience. If you have any questions, please contact me at 703-777-2205 or bnotar@loudounliteracy.org. |
