How to Sign Out a Book

You must first locate a book that interests you from the library, then you must ask one of the staff to get a copy for you from our cabinets that you can sign out. Never sign out books from our library shelves. They are for your reference only.

Once you’ve been given a copy of the book that you want, you need to sign it out in our Library Sign Out binder. You will need to provide the date, your name, your phone number, the name of the book and how many copies you are taking.

Reading, Writing, and Spelling

Patterns in Spelling

This book works on spelling patterns with short vowels. It stresses the patterns that are regularly found in English words. Exercises help students discover patterns and rules.

Structures in Spelling

This book examines words using prefixes, roots and suffixes. It helps students recognize and spell word parts. It introduces structures in spelling and has chapters on common prefixes and suffixes as well as Latin and Greek roots.

Writing to Learn

This series emphasizes writing as a process. It startes with writing sentences for beginners and progresses to writing essays for advanced writers. There are vocabulary acquisition activities and grammar practice to encourage development of strong writing skills.

Stand Out Reading and Writing Challenge

This series of books offers vocabulary development alongside practicing reading and writing skills. Each lesson focuses on a life-skill topic meaningful to learners. These books encourage students to engage in personalized writing activities.

Sam and Pat

This series is ideal for beginning literacy learners. The books use a phonics-based approach and topics focused on daily life experiences. Each reading and writing lesson features target sounds to work on. There are flash cards that can be photocopied for additional practice.

Reading

Reading Wise

This is a series of lessons that can help students get more from what they read. Lessons focus on how and when to use different comprehension strategies. Learners develop an awareness of which strategies work best for them in order to understand various texts.

Laubach Way to Reading

This is a basic reading and writing series created for adults with limited reading abilities. The series provides a systematic development of basic reading and writing skills. Each lesson includes vocabulary, phonics, writing practice, reading a short story, and answering comprehension questions.

Voyager

This is a four-stage program that utilizes contemporary content and instructional approaches to teach reading, writing, critical thinking, and communication skills adults need. It takes students from the beginning stages of reading and writing through the ninth grade level.

ELL

All Star

This is a four-level course that develops language skills based on real-life topics. These textbooks feature a standards-based curriculum. Each topic can be related to student needs and the activities can be adapted for any classroom.

Center Stage

This language course integrates all of the language skills in order to foster learners' communication skills. The emphasis is on practical language use and relevant topics. Communicative activities encourage learners to practice using English creatively and meaningfully.

Stand Out Basic

This is a standards-based program that encourages language development through real-world activities and life skills.

Side-by-Side

This program is aimed at English language learners from the beginning through the high intermediate levels. The series engages students in meaningful conversations within grammar-based frameworks. Activities prepare students to create their own conversations.

English No Problem!

This is a theme-based series with five levels. The textbooks emphasize developing critical thinking skills and cultural awareness. Language development highlights life skill topics. The series addresses issues and topics meaningful for adults in America.

North Star

This series focuses on reading and writing or listening and speaking skills. The books are designed for students who have academic language goals.

Foundations

This textbook focuses on developing all four language skills for low-beginning level students. It provides learners with the vocabulary and language they need to communicate in real-world situations. Foundation is designed as a precursor to the Side-by-Side or other beginning level textbooks.

Laubach Way to English

This series focuses on developing basic literacy skills for ELL students. It provides a comprehensive beginning level program using all four language skills.

Excellent English

This language program offers learners grammar and other language skills that foster career and academic success. Lessons focus on real-life situations and the language needed to be active in the community. Activities introduce cultural awareness and pragmatics.

TOEFL

Delta’s Key to the TOEFL Test

This book prepares learners to take the TOEFL exam. It encourages students to develop skills in listening, reading, and writing. There is a diagnostic test to determine the areas that learners should focus on. There are four practice tests similar to the actual TOEFL assessment.

Listening and Speaking

Clear Speech

This textbook emphasizes development of speaking and listening comprehension skills. The course presents sounds in such a way as to require students to think about how the quality of pronunciation may affect meaning. This approach uses rhyme and linking during practice activities.

You Said It!

This textbook focuses on listening and speaking strategies. Activities offer authentic communication practice through tasks and interactive projects. The ability to read and write in English is required to use this book.

GED Reference

Complete GED Preparation

This is an extensive guide that prepares students to pass the GED test. This book covers the five subject areas that are covered on the test: Language Arts, Writing, Language Arts, Reading , Social Studies, Science and Mathematics. There are also simulated GED tests with answer keys and explanations.

Math for the Real World

This two-book series features units on addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, percents, fractions and decimals.

Pre-GED

This series contains books that cover mathematics, writing, critical thinking skills, language arts, reading, social studies, and science. Each book features skills and concepts in the context of everyday, real-life applications.

Smart Solutions

These books feature mathematical practice. Skill lessons present instruction and practice with computation and word problems. Tool lessons provide insight into using objects and concepts in a variety of situations. Problem solver activities offer techniques to help students be successful with word problems. Application exercises reflect real-life topics that require mathematical skills.

Workplace

Workplace Plus

This is a four-level ELL course geared toward adult learners. Each book features activities to help students understand written and spoken English used in the community. Lessons provide students with the language knowledge to use their own words outside of a class setting. There is also a focus on cultural and civics expectations related to the workplace.

Job Survival Skills

This is a skill book that teaches behaviors expected in the workplace. It is intended for secondary or adult students preparing to enter the work force. Each lesson emphasizes social expectations and problem-solving skills.

Conversations for Work

This book is for beginning level ELL students who need to develop language skills for effective workplace communication. Each lesson has a conversation to practice, vocabulary, listening and speaking activities, and grammar exercises related to work themes.

English for Work Activities

This is a picture process dictionary that demonstrates work activities step-by-step. Each activity stresses vocabulary development. This resource provides practical language needed for the workplace.

ESL for Job Success

This is another picture process dictionary that displays vocabulary related to work environments. There are several themes, such as using tools and safety information. Activities encourage students to relate new words and phrases to their personal experiences.

English ASAP

This language-learning program is four levels and geared toward adults and young adults in the workplace. Conversations, texts, and listening activities revolve around workplace situations. The series teachers the language skills learners need to be successful on the job.

Reference

Oxford Picture Dictionary

This reference book features thousands of words with color illustrations. This is an excellent resource for vocabulary instruction. The accompanying workbooks offer activities for practice.

English for Everyday Activities

This reference book is a picture process dictionary. It contains everyday life activities broken down into steps with corresponding pictures and typical language used to describe the situations. Key vocabulary are associated with each activity.

Grammar

Grammar Form and Function

This is a three-level series that provides instruction on using English grammar. Activities foster vocabulary development and understanding of different grammar structures. Writing assignments offer learners an opportunity to use what they have learned in a meaningful way. Self-tests and quizzes give both student teacher a profile of skills mastered and skills to be improved.

Grammar in Context

The series presents grammar using reading topics that deal with American culture and practical situations such as finding an apartment. Each chapter contains exercises for students to practice writing and speaking skills.

Practical English Usage

This reference book helps both students and teachers understand how the English language functions. There are examples and explanations to demonstrate each grammar or style point. It also shows differences between American and British English.

Civics and Citizenship

Voices of Freedom

This is a content-based civics and English textbook that introduces students to American history and government. This book can be used to help learners prepare for the citizenship test. Activities encourage students to think about civic participation.

Civics Flash Cards

These flash cards feature all of the possible questions on the citizenship exam. Students and teachers can work with these cards to prepare for the test.
