Loudoun Literacy Council LibraryHow to Sign Out a BookYou must first locate a book that interests you from the library, then you must ask one of the staff to get a copy for you from our cabinets that you can sign out. Never sign out books from our library shelves. They are for your reference only. Once you’ve been given a copy of the book that you want, you need to sign it out in our Library Sign Out binder. You will need to provide the date, your name, your phone number, the name of the book and how many copies you are taking. Recommended Books: LiteracyChallenger Adult Reading SeriesThis is a program designed to develop reading, writing and reasoning skills in adult and adolescent students. The first four books in the Challenger series emphasize learning to read, developing basic decoding, vocabulary, comprehension, and writing skills. Beginning with Book 5, the emphasis shifts to reading to learn, developing higher-level comprehension and reading skills while expanding the student knowledge base. The Challenger series consists of 8 student books, 5 teacher manuals, answer keys, the Challenger Placement Tool, 8 puzzle books, and 4 books of writing activities. Voyager: Reading & Writing for Today’s AdultsThis is a four-stage program that utilizes contemporary content and instructional approaches to teach the reading, writing, critical thinking, and communication skills those adults need in today’s world. It takes the students from the beginning stages of reading and writing through the ninth grade level. The Voyager series consists of 9 student books, 9 workbooks, 4 teacher’s resource guides, and a placement tool. Recommended Books: ESLLaubach Way to EnglishThis is a series of manuals especially designed for teaching English to speakers of other languages (ESOL), particularly to functionally illiterate adults. It provides a comprehensive beginning English program in listening, speaking, reading and writing skills. The Laubach Way to English consists of 4 skill books, 4 workbooks, 4 illustration books, and 4 teacher’s manuals. Laubach Way to ReadingThis is a basic reading and writing series developed for adults with little or no reading ability. The series provides a systematic development of basic reading and writing skills. Each lesson includes vocabulary, phonic, reading of a short story, comprehension checks, and writing practice. The Laubach Way to Reading consists of 4 skill books, 4 workbooks, 4 illustration books, and 4 teacher’s manuals. New VistaA five-level course that gives young adult learners a comprehensive set of communication skills in the English language. Students are given a firm grammatical basis on which to build their communication skills. New Vistas consists of five levels that include four components to make students’ learning experience interesting and successful. The components are student books, teacher’s resource manuals, workbooks, and audio programs. New InterchangeEnglish for International Communication Is a multi-level course in English as a second or foreign language for young adults and adults. The course covers the four skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing, as well as improving pronunciation and building vocabulary. New Interchange consists of three levels that include nine components that build a foundation for accurate and fluent communication. The components are student books, teacher’s manuals, workbooks, class audio cassettes or CDs, student audio cassettes or CDs, video, CD-ROM, the placement test, and lab cassettes. Recommended Books: TOEFLDelta’s Key to the TOEFL TestTest of English as a Foreign Language Incorporates the latest research in language acquisition and cognitive science. Continually demonstrates to the teachers and students how far they have come and how far they had to go. The book is split into three sections: listening, structure, reading, and writing. An initial diagnostic test is available to determine areas that the student needs to focus. There are also four practice tests that are similar to the actual TOEFL test. GED ReferenceBuilding StrategiesA course has two parts, mathematics and social studies. The math book is especially designed to help develop mate skills and problem-solving techniques. The social studies book will help with reading skills as the student uses the maps, charts, graphs and tables. Complete GED PreparationThis is the largest guide available to get a student ready to pass the GED test. This book covers the five subject areas that are covered on the test: Language Arts, Writing, Language Arts, Reading , Social Studies, Science and Mathematics. There are also simulated GED tests with answer keys and explanations. Math for the Real WorldThis short series (two books) are broken into units and start as basic as reading and writing numbers fractions and percents. Pre-GEDThis series contains six books that cover Mathematics, Writing, Critical Thinking Skills, Language Arts, Reading , Social Studies, and Science. Skills lessons present instruction and practice with both computation and word problems. Tools lessons provide insight into using objects and concepts in as wide variety of situations. Problem Solvers provide techniques to help students become successful with word problems. Applications reflect real-life topics that require mathematics. The components that make up this learning toll are Measurement and Data Analysis, Comprehensive Math Review, Whole Numbers and money, Decimals, Fractions, Ratios, and Presents, and algebra and Geometry. Supplemental LiteracyAll-New Easy True StoriesA Picture-based Beginning Reader Is a low-beginning reader for students of English, containing 20 units, each centered on a story adapted from a newpaper or magazine article. It includes pre-reading, reading, post-reading, and writing exercises. English Survival SeriesThis is a series that covers spelling, writing and reading skills. This is done by building vocabulary, writing sentences and paragraphs, and recognizing details while reading. How to Read for Everyday LivingThis series develops the skills necessary for reading real-life materials. Each activity lesson introduces basic vocabulary relating to a subject with which the student must cope. Subject’s range from labels to checks, and notices to menus. There are two books in the “How to Read” portion and two that cover Math, Science, Social Studies, Science and Literature. There are also two teachers’ guides in the series. In the KnowThe Informational Reading Series Is a four-level supplementary reading program to be used with ABE students, featuring informational articles on topics of interest to teenagers and adults, accompanied by activities focusing on comprehension, word recognition, word study, and writing. Reading WiseThis is a series of lessons that can help the student get more from what they read. They can improve their thinking skills in order to better understand what they are reading. The student will develop comprehension skills that work. There are eight books in the series and teachers’ guide. SUPPLEMENTAL ESL Clear SpeechPronunciation and Listening Comprehension in North America This course presents sounds in a way that requires the student to think about how certain qualities of sounds affect meaning. This approach makes it possible for an early introduction to rhyme and linking during practice of sounds and encourages the student to think about sounds in a larger context. Clear Speech consists of two levels that include three components that improve pronunciation and listening comprehension. The components are Teacher’s resource books, student books, the clear listening test, and the clear speaking test. CrossroadsIs a series for adults that have diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds, educational levels, learning styles, occupational histories, and hopes for the future. There are four levels in the series each contains: student book, workbook, and teacher’s book. The ETC Program: A Competency-Based Reading/Writing BookETC is a six-level ESL program for adults who are learning English to improve their lives and working skills. The material of this level is divided into three books, carefully coordinated, chapter-by-chapter, in theme, competency goals, grammar, and vocabulary. Emergency EnglishIs an introduction to teaching English to speakers of other languages. Each lesson contains essential vocabulary and conversations on day-today topics that newcomers will find immediately helpful. There are also tips for developing lessons from scratch, and a special section of pronunciation lessons. There are two books a handbook for tutors and a workbook for students. English in ActionIs a four-level core language series for ESL/EFL. Each unit includes an illustrated dictionary, active grammar, pronunciation, reading, writing, and grammary summary, along with integrated exercises. English No Problem!Language for Home, School, Work, and Community Is a theme-based, performance-based five-level series focused on developing critical thinking and cultural awareness and on building language and life skills. Designed for adult and young adult English language learners, the series addresses themes and issues meaningful to adult in the U.S. FoundationsIs an all-skills textbook that offers low-beginning level students of English the basic vocabulary and language they need to communicate in essential life skill situations—Personal Information; Everyday Activities; The Classroom; People and Things; Food, Supermarkets, and Restaurants; Colors, Clothing and Shopping; Money and Banking; Health and Medicine; The Post Office, School, and library; Occupation and Work Skills; Directions and Transportation; Weather and Recreation. North StarFocus on Reading and Writing Is a five-level series focusing on listening/speaking and reading/writing, designed to work along with Longman’s Focus on Grammar series. The series is written for students with academic as well as personal language goals, employing intellectually challenging themes. Reading PowerReading for Pleasure – Vocabulary Skills - Comprehension Skills – Thinking Skills – Reading Faster Is a three-level series of student-centered reading skills texts to help student develop solid reading skils. Intermediate level includes excerpts from short stories, plays, encyclopedias, and articles. Real-Life English: A Competency-Based ESL Program for AdultsIs a complete competency-based, four-skill program for teaching ESL to adults and young adults. Real-Life English follows a competency-based syllabus that is compatible with the CASAS and MELT competencies. The program consists of four levels and a literacy level. The literacy level is intended for use with students who have no prior knowledge of English and few or no literacy skills in their own language. Side-by-SideIs an English language program for young-adult learners from beginning to high-intermediate levels. Side-by Side engages the student in meaningful conversational exchanges within carefully structured grammatical frameworks, and then encourages the student to break away from the textbook and create conversations of their own. The program consists of Student Books 1 through 4 and accompanying Activity Workbooks, Teacher’s guides, a Video Program, a Picture Program, and a Testing Program. Included are scenes, practices, lifeskills/workskills, cross-cultural discussions, games, and checklists. What a Life! Stories of Amazing PeopleIs a three-book series of biographies of people who have made a significant contribution to the world. Included are reading, vocabulary, comprehension discussion and writing sections JOB SKILLS English ASAP: Connecting English to the WorkplaceThis material is SCANS-based syllabus teaches skills learners need to succeed in the workplace. The syllabus is correlated with the SCANS competencies, an arrangement of work skills recognized by the U.S. Department of Labor as essential to every job. The components of English ASAP are: student’s books, workbooks, teacher’s books, audiocassettes, dictionary, and placement tests. Job Survival SkillsThis is a skill book that teaches those behaviors most needed in the world of work. It has controlled low readabilities at grade levels 3-6 combined with mature levels of interest (levels 8-adult). It is intended for secondary or adult students preparing for entry into the work world. More Dialogs for Everyday UseThere are two books in this series. Each one covers short situational dialogs for students of English as a foreign language. These dialogs will help the students gain practice in hearing and understanding the Stream of speech. SOS Speaking of SurvivalThis course is designed for adult learners (ESL) at the high beginner/low intermediate level. IT presents the basic survival contexts all newcomers must cope with. Teacher AidsBasic text: LITSTARTStrategies for Adult Literacy and ESL Tutors Is a state of the art adult literacy tutoring guide. It provides the strategies and background necessary to tutor an adult in the skills of reading, writing, and speaking English. Included are adult learning information, strategies for each component of literacy tutoring, and enhanced guidance on the lesson planning process. Supplemental Teacher AidsGrammar EssentialsGraded Exercises in English Is a supplement to other grammar texts that offers needed variety to a lesson and provides additional drill materials on important points of grammar and usage. The focus is “lots of practice.” It covers grammar from basic to advanced levels. Lessons With LaughterPhotocopiable Lessons for Different Levels, Straightforward, Easy-to-use Material for Busy Teachers Is a book that uses humor to make learning more enjoyable and increase students’ motivation. Four sections include jokes, cartoons, misprints, and reading for fun. It uses what its British author terms the “Lexical Approach” and is appropriate for several levels of students. Zero PrepReady-to-Go Activities for the Language Classroom Is a book that assists teachers in saving time on preparing dictations, going through readings to find new vocabulary words, preparing comprehension questions, and correcting errors. Some areas covered are Icebreakers, listening, speaking, reading, writing, vocabulary and structure. Some strategies include jigsaw, bingo, truth or lie, acting out, etc. Word StudyPatterns in SpellingPatterns with short vowels. This book stresses the patterns that are regularly found in English words. It emphasizes the regularity of spelling rather than a purely phonics-based approach. Exercises are given to help students discover patterns and rules. There are 4 books in the series. Structures in SpellingWords with Prefixes, Roots, and Suffixes This book helps the student to recognize and spell word parts. It introduces structures in spelling and has chapters on common suffixes, common prefixes, and Latin and Greek roots. Grammar in ContextThere are three books in this series: Book 1 High beginning; Book 2 Intermediate; and Book 3 High Intermediate. Grammar is presented in readings based on American topics and culture, and texts deal with practical situations such as finding an apartment. Each chapter contains exercises for students to practice writing and speaking skills. Grammar Step-by-Step with PicturesThis book contains 46 grammar lessons, each of which consists of two pages of presentation followed by four pages of focused practice, both supplemented with numerous pictures. In addition to the essential structures of English, it contains over 800 vocabulary words which are presented and then repeated throughout the text. Basic English GrammarThis book introduces students to the form, meaning, and usage of basic English structures. There are numerous exercises at the end of each chapter and occasional illustrations. Grammar EssentialsGraded Exercises in English This book is designed to supplement a regular classroom text. Grammar points are presented with examples, and then exercises are provided to practice correct usage. Thee is an answer key at the back, making it useful for self-study. Basic Grammar in UseReference and practice for students of English This is a basic grammar book for beginning to low-intermediate level students of English. There are 106 units in the book and each unit is about a different point of grammar. Each unit is two pages: explanation on the left-hand page and exercises on the right. |
